Adi up and running with Timbers.

Nigeria striker Fanendo Adi scored his first goal of the season as he helped his MLS side Portland Timbers to a 3-2 win over Minnesota United on Saturday.

The win was Timber’s first of the season as they have struggled since the start of the season with new coach Giovanni Savarese trying out new formations that haven’t yielded fruits.

Adi, who is the club’s all-time top scorer was in imperious form during the game is a constant threat to the Minnesota defence. Timbers went ahead in the 20th minute when Alvas Powell powered his way through the Minnesota defence to strike a low shot into the net for a 1-0 win.

Three minutes later Powell got a fantastic cross into Minnesota’s box with Giovanni Savarese at hand to convert for Timber’s second goal.

Adi almost made it 3-0 as he sprinted clear into the box but his shot was well saved by the Minnesota goalkeeper Matthew Lampson. Darwin Quintero drew a goal back for Minnesota as they kept pressing for an equaliser.

The Nigerian striker finally opened his goals account for the season when he connected a Valeri half-volley with his head to edge his side 3-1 ahead in the 74th minute. He also thought he had scored a second when he held off his marker to slot home but the goal was ruled offside by the VAR to cut his joy shot.
