Pointers from Port-Harcourt

Image
Sunday Oliseh finally got his first win as the coach of the Super Eagles as Nigeria beat Niger 2-0 in an international friendly at the Adokiye Amasiemaka Stadium in Port-Harcourt on Tuesday Despite the win, the display was a bit tardy at times and Nigeria probably played their best football in the second half after Oliseh made some changes in the game. With due respect to the Les Mena, they aren’t exactly the type of opponents that one would use as a yardstick to measure how far Oliseh’s team has come, but a win will surely soothe some frayed nerves. The goalless draw in Tanzania was greeted with a lot of cynicism from Nigerian fans who felt the team were lucky to get a point in Dar es Salaam after putting up a timid display.

Lessons from Dar

Nigeria played out an uninspiring goalless draw with Tanzania on match day two of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam in Sunday Oliseh’s first game in charge of the Super Eagles. It could have been a debut to forget for Oliseh if not for the heroics of Carl Ikeme who was also making his debut for the Super Eagles. Nigeria were ran ragged for majority of the game by their hosts as the Super Eagles display was characterized by some sloppy passing and weak finishing. Supersport.com runs the rule on the game and looks at the lessons learnt from Oliseh’s first game in charge. Eagles are on a decline:  I don’t want to sound like a pessimist or a doomsday prophet, but it’s quite apt to say the Super Eagles are on downward spiral. Tanzania fans were out in full force and had plenty to cheer about despite the draw

Litmus test for Oliseh's newbies

Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh knows a lot about pressure from Nigerian fans. As a player, he had a run-in with fans and the press alike. Yet he rose and even captained the team in his playing days. Such will be the temperament when he files out for the first time as the coach of the Super Eagles at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam this weekend. Oliseh showed a glimpse of his former self when he categorically told the media: “Any player who isn’t playing in the first team of the top division will not play for me”. Those were his words just after being unveiled as the Super Eagles coach. Though some concessions were made along the line, Oliseh had already set himself up for scrutiny from the average Super Eagles fan. When the final list of players was released, there a few surprises, a few comebacks, and a glut of usual suspects in the mix. Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme made a return from the international wilderness since he was named i
