Plateau United aiming for NPFL title

Image
At the start of the 2016/17 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season, no one would have predicted that Plateau United will be top of the table. Top of the table with a game in hand to boot. That has been the phenomenal rise of the Jos-based side and if they can keep the pace in the second half of the stanza, then a first NPFL title will be on the horizon. United were not meant to be in this position, no one gave them a chance from the beginning and even after an impressive start to the season, many felt the team would not be able to sustain the momentum. Then there was the Kennedy Boboye factor. The former youth international is known for starting the league like a house on fire and then fizzling out. His experience last year with Abia Warriors come fresh to mind and a lot opined those antecedents will not change with his latest challenge at Plateau. Boboye and his charges have managed to prove doubters wrong. Though the title is still 19 games away, the ‘Sai

Rivers Angels and what not to wear.

I haven’t written an opinion piece on Women's football as far as I can remember. Maybe a match report or a feature on a female footballer, but definitely not an opinion piece. No, I don’t hate women or women in sports. On the contrary I love women. I really do. I reckon they run the world and they are the salt of the earth. Err..before I digress, this piece isn't about my love for women, far from it. It has to do with something I felt was strange and in my opinion (after all this is an opinion piece) distasteful to be complementary to the owners of Rivers Angels. It goes without saying that female footballers in Nigeria don’t get a fair deal anywhere. Be it the Super Falcons, the Falconets, Flamingoes or even the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL). It’s been like that for ages though and seems to get worse by the day. I first fell in love with women's football when I was in primary school. So there was this girl called Barbara. She was a damn goo

Rangers blame fatigue for Confederation cup ouster

Enugu Rangers chief coach Chukwuma Agbo has blamed fatigue for his side's loss to Zambia's Zesco United. The Nigerian champions fell 0-3 to the Southern African side in Saturday’s Caf Confederation Cup playoff second leg at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. The Flying Antelopes are now eliminated from the Africa’s second tier club competition on a 2-5 aggregate scoreline. A first-half brace by forward John Ching’Andu and Jesse Were solo effort ensured the Zambian top-flight team earned the maximum points. Agbo said his side lost the contest in Enugu because of the tedious and untidy travelling arrangements for the reverse fixture clash in Ndola. “We lost the match right there in Enugu, we got in here (Ndola) less than two hours, the fatigue did not help matters. “You cannot cheat nature but the pep talk at half time almost worked magic as the team came out stronger before the silly goal. “We told the players that if Zesco United could come to Enugu to equ
