Joseph Olowu declares for Nigeria

Arsenal U23 defender Joseph Olowu is primed to follow in the footsteps of former Arsenal star Alex Iwobi as he has declared his allegiance to Nigeria.

Olowu, who is a mainstay in the Arsenal U23 side, was initially pencilled to be part of the Flying Eagles preparatory camp in Germany before Poland 2019 but injury cut short that dream.

The centre back, who can also play at right-back and in defensive midfield overcame that injury and is now having a decent run in Arsenal’s U23 side.

Olowu, 19, who also trains with the Arsenal first-team, told Andrew Randa that Nigeria has always been on his mind and will always be the first choice.

“I want to play for my country Nigeria and do the nation proud. This has always been my dream and I am hoping it happens soon.

“There was some contact before the FIFA U20 World Cup but I got injured around that period so I could not link up with the team.

“I was super excited to see Tom Dele-Bashiru (Watford) and Nnamdi Ofobhor (Bournemouth) at the U20’s and this further fueled my dreams,” Olowu added.

The defender, though injured still made the trip to Poland alongside his father to support the team and watched the last group game against Ukraine which Nigeria drew 1-1.

There is already talk of a potential call up for Olowu with the U23’s as Imama’s side prepare for the crunch tie with Sudan next month.

“I hope to be given a chance with the U23’s. Nigeria has a lot of good players all over the globe but I am looking forward to playing for my country. I hope I get picked so I can show what I can do.”

“Training with the Arsenal first team and playing for the U23’s have helped me regain full fitness and I hope that I get the call after the disappointment of the U20’s, " Olowu enthused.
